Planning New Public Transportation in Berlin

(Gen. Mgr) & (Partner)
Pages 231-232 | Published online: 23 Mar 2018

Abstract

Berlin is re-emerging as a key junction in the German rail network and an important link for the entire European continent. Managing this increased rail traffic has called for development of substantial new infrastructure, as fifty years of partition and isolation had crippled a once functional railway network. The new system calls for upgrading the east-west route, introducing a new north-south route and incorporating some sections of the existing ring route. Crucial to the concept is a new 3.4 km long, four-track railway tunnel running through the city center beneath the new government district, the Tiergarten Park, and the new development at Potsdamer Platz.
