The Materiality of Color

Boris Wiseman Boris Wiseman is Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Copenhagen University. He has written extensively about Claude Lévi-Strauss, especially as seen from the point of view of aesthetics. More recently he has co-edited, with Adriana Bontea, a special issue of the journal Paragraph on the works of French philosopher Claude Imbert, and with Anthony Paul Chiasmus and Culture (Berghahn Books, forthcoming). He is currently working on the visual capture of movement. [email protected]

ABSTRACT

This article presents a theory of the materiality of color which derives in part from the non-denotative approach to signification opened by the Symbolist poets' experimentation with the sensory qualities of language. Its specific focus is on the connotative power of various uses of indigo.
