Abstract
The wearing of head coverings by Muslim women is based on the Koran. It has been known for some time that the headdress is the main clothing difference between Hui and other nationalities. Hui women traditionally wore a white hat or traditional gaitou (head covering) in most areas. Since the 1990s, more and more urban Hui women have begun to wear a headscarf to cover their hair, neck, ears, and forehead, something that had not been common earlier. Why has this social phenomenon appeared? It is caused by a combination of Hui cultural psychological factors, the mainstream cultural context, and changes in government policy, among other reasons. The headscarf, as a cultural phenomenon, is an expression of Muslim identity and Hui self-consciousness.
