Abstract
The affair of the killing of Shaocheng Mao by Confucius first appeared in "Hsün Tzu - Yu tso" and also in such works as "Han-shih nai-chuan", "Introduction to ‘Chufa’ in Paihut'ung" by Han Ying of the Han dynasty, "Huai nan tzu - Fan lun" by Liu An, "K'ung-tzu-shih-chia" in "Historical Records by Szuma Ch'ien, "Chih-wu - Shuo yüan" by Liu Hsiang, "Chiang jui and Ting hsien in Lun heng" by Wang Ch'ung, "K'ung-tzu-chia-yü - Shih-chu" a forgery by Wang Su during the Wei dynasty, "Yin Wen-tzu's Ta-tao-hsia" a forgery brought out between the Wei and Chin dynasties, and "Hsinlun - Hsinyin" by Liu Chou of the Northern Ch'i dynasty. Later accounts of this affair differed greatly, and viewpoints were at variance. At present, I am offering my personal view and making a brief criticism of the fallacious sayings.
