Abstract
Programmed instruction originated in the United States. In 1926, an American, S. L. Pressey, designed an automatic teaching machine. He maintained, "This machine is superior to a teacher in handling the day-to-day chores of teaching. Using it will free the teacher from the routine of teaching and save time and energy, thus enabling him to pursue more important teaching responsibilities." Pressey's ideas, which relate to the concept of programmed instruction, attracted little attention at the time and did not spread.
