Once More Raising Doubts on the Theory of "A Singular Task" for Regular Senior Middle Schools

Abstract

In the essay "An Exploration of the Tasks of Regular Senior Middle Schools" (published in Studies in Education 9, 1985; hereafter referred to as "the Xu article"), Comrade Xu Hai proposed that from now on the tasks of regular senior middle schools ought to be changed from "dual responsibilities" to a single one. He offered the opinion that these schools should only have the responsibility of sending qualified new students to colleges and universities. Comrade Sun Gengmin has raised some doubts, in a pointed way, regarding this opinion (see Studies in Education 1, 1986). This author, also, would like to air an opinion about this major question, which relates to the direction toward which the enterprise of regular senior middle schools is to be oriented in the future.
