Problems in General and Compulsory Education in Shanghai, and Underlying Causes

Pages 69-77 | Published online: 20 Dec 2014

Abstract

Shanghai had a somewhat earlier start in terms of the implementation of the system of nine-year compulsory education, and it has achieved some good results. However, we must also perceive clearly that there is merely a good beginning to this project, which is a matter of great significance in the history of education, but we cannot therefore assume that all will be well. "Nothing in the world can be achieved unless we put ourselves to the task of doing it." This is by no means an exaggeration. Let us look at the problems that exist in the area of general and compulsory education in Shanghai.
