The Big Lawn and Other Things: Excerpt from Memories of Old Kunming

Pages 63-72 | Published online: 20 Dec 2014

Abstract

The big lawn in front of Lianda's library is a very famous place. On the evening of November 25, 1945, it was here that the Current Events Forum of the four universities [in Kunming] was held. The reactionaries were unable to stop the forum from going on, even though they did send out guns and cannons to threaten the students who gathered and sent out spies and special agents to disrupt and spoil the meeting. The next day, the Zaoyao ribao (Rumor-Mongering Daily)—for that was what people called the Kuomintang's Zhongyang ribao [Central Daily] at the time—slandered the event, calling it a "bandit alarm in the western suburbs." This elicited the public indignation of all the students throughout the city and incited them to take joint action in a general student strike and protest, which was really how the "December 1" incident got started. Every year during the anniversary observations of the movement, people explain this to us in detail, so there is no need for me to belabor the point here.
