Abstract
Before the Ten-Year Turmoil [the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976], Beijing University president Lu Ping (b. 1927) had brought forward a policy for the university: to continue the tradition of the ancient Taixue (Imperial College); to learn from the Soviet Union; to make comparisons with England and the United States. After the turmoil started this policy was criticized and became one of the charges against Lu. I had also said the history of Beijing University should be reckoned from the Imperial College of the Han dynasty [206 B.C-A.D. 220]. I don't know if I influenced Lu's policy or not; perhaps it was his own idea. In any case, the criticism of that period did not touch me.
