Abstract
Generally speaking, the religious activities of Buddhists consist of (1) personal religious cultivation and observance of the commandments, (2) lectures and congregations of various sorts, and (3) pilgrimages and worship at temples. In the communist-ruled Chinese mainland, it is questionable whether sufficient leisure time is available for personal religious cultivation. The communist new spapers and periodicals have carried no material regarding individual cultivation of the faith; consequently, as regards the religious activities of Buddhists on the mainland, one can only make observations from collective external behavior in connection with the various assemblies, congregations, pilgrimages, etc. In the present chapter, we shall pursue such observations on the basis of various reports issued by the Chinese Communists.
