Chapter Four: Maniacal Blood Debts - Class Persecution

Pages 29-52 | Published online: 20 Dec 2014

Abstract

The Shanghai Harbor docks were a black hell before the liberation. The dock workers were not only the victims of severe exploitation, but they also suffered maniacal persecution. The class enemy, in order to maintain this dog-eat-dog system of exploitation, crushed any worker resistance and carried on an extraordinarily cruel and vindictive, bloody system of control. These enemies built up a blood debt to the dock workers of old Shanghai which accumulated steadily. On the docks at that time, the local bullies had formed gangs. They usurped authority and acted against the law. It was a dark and gloomy world. This evil domination was, of course, inseparable from the class exploitation and class oppression of the old society.
