Abstract
To aspire to something is a common social frame of mind. What we are talking about here is not some general psychological need or want, but a sense of melancholy, a bewilderment, and even an anxiety and impatience that is mixed in with a certain ill-defined and indescribable sense of anticipation. It is this frame of mind in society that has produced the thunderous repercussions of one particular television drama. Therefore, it is probably more accurate to chalk this up as a manifestation of the failure of life itself than to ascribe it to the success of art. Our assessment of this phenomenal social impact will have to be raised from that of art to culture.
