The Reorganization of the People's Daily

Abstract

On October 28 the leaders of the People's Daily were called to Zhongnanhai, whereupon Hu Qili announced the decision of the Central Party Secretariat: Accept the resignation of Hu Jiwei and remove Wang Ruoshui from his position as deputy editor-in-chief. The instructions were that these two would eventually be transferred from the People's Daily, but for the time being they should remain at the People's Daily to participate in the rectification, in the course of which they are to be criticized; ex-editor-in-chief Qin Chuan is to be appointed director of the People's Daily and former deputy editor-in-chief Li Zhuang is to be promoted to the position of editor-in-chief. The other members of the Central Secretariat (with the exception of Hu Yaobang) were present and also spoke.
