Abstract

On June 9, 1984, Hu Qiaomu suddenly came to our newspaper offices to give a speech to the leading cadres of the paper. This time he appeared quite unusual, for he seemed somewhat depressed and ill at ease. He had prepared the script for his speech in advance and read it in a faint voice, word by word. This was the first time I ever saw him behave in such a manner.
