The Continuation and Rejuvenation of Intellectual Tradition (II): The Mohists (mo)

Pages 29-41 | Published online: 08 Dec 2014

Abstract

The origins of the Mohist lineage is also said to have connections to ceremonial and ritual knowledge. The chapter "Yiwen zhi" (Treatise on Literature)" in the Han shu claims that "the Mohist lineage came from those who maintained the ancestral temple." There is apparently some basis for this. "Dangran" in the Lüshi chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lü) records this story:

Duke Hui of Lu ordered Zai Rang to request permission from the king to conduct the ritual of the suburban temple, and King Huan ordered Shi Jiao to go to Lu. Duke Hui detained him there. His descendants lived in Lu and Mozi studied with them.
