Girls and the Learning of Physical Concepts

Pages 83-96 | Published online: 08 Dec 2014

Abstract

Several international studies show that girls have a poorer command of physical concepts than boys. This article examines factors that explain this phenomenon, especially the importance of everyday concepts and experiences toward the learning of scientific concepts. It also discusses the connection of gender learning styles with the learning of concepts, as well as the conflict between youth-related development tasks, such as cultural masculinity and teaching physics.
