Abstract

Sincerity is without question a necessary trait for a literary work, but sincerity is the least of it, Dostoevsky once said. A drunk man might be sincerely enraptured by our poor joke. But he might be just as sincerely insulted and throw a bottle at us, even though we did not insult him. He sincerely felt insulted.
