Abstract

Many observers have been anticipating a change of course in Russia, but no one knows what direction it might take and whether it would necessarily be an improvement. Rumors of coups and resignations, divergent interpretations of Chernomyrdin's role and Kirienko's illfated tenure as prime minister, the unwinnable race between IMF loans and capital flight411 contribute to a mood of ominous uncertainty.
