Abstract
The question of the awarding of degrees, discussed in the pages of Literaturnaia gazeta, is quite timely and a matter of practical importance. It is hardly necessary to demonstrate that in the century of the scientific-technological revolution and of solving the grandiose tasks of building communism, the role of science has increased immeasurably. The Soviet state is allocating ever-increasing sums to its development. To be a scientist is becoming worthy of esteem and even fashionable. The attraction of persons of all ages to this promising and respected field is quite understandable.
