Abstract
On May 7 and 8, 1974, a round table meeting devoted to discussion of sociophilosophical problems of demography was held in the editorial offices of Voprosy filosofii. Interest in these problems has arisen as a consequence of the unprecedented changes in the field of demography - changes of universal historical significance that have particularly occurred in the most recent decades. The scale and significance of these changes have not yet been adequately assimilated by scientific thought and public opinion. Yet every year reveals more and more ties between, on the one hand, the economic, sociopolitical, and cultural development of various countries and, on the other, the solution of demographic problems. The convocation of the International Congress on Population Problems in Bucharest in August 1974, which the UN has proclaimed World Population Year, is evidence of broad public interest in these problems.
