Abstract
Article 20 of the Principles of Legislation on Marriage and the Family makes it a duty for adult children to maintain parents unable to work and in need of assistance and to care for them. The provision of the principles establishing that duty is reproduced in Article 77 of the RSFSR Marriage and Family Code without supplementation or added specifics. Thus far the legal literature, too, has not interpreted the content of that duty. As a consequence, demands to respect it often lack the required protection. For example, one S. sued her adult children for support and their obligation to care for her. The matter of support payments was properly settled, but her second demand was left unconsidered.
