Why I Did Not Sign That Letter

Pages 66-73 | Published online: 08 Dec 2014

Abstract

Some time ago, I received a letter from the initiative group of the voluntary "Memorial" [Memorial] society. The purpose of the society was proclaimed to be the commemoration of the victims of unlawful and unjustified repressions in the mid-1930s. I was asked to sign this letter, which was addressed to the CPSU Central Committee. I was told that many signatures had already been collected. I did not sign the letter, which may seem monstrous; therefore, I have decided now to explain and argue my position even if only for myself.
