Abstract
Between August 19 and August 21, Moscow was perhaps the only theater of military actions within the country. It was there that the fate of democracy, the fate of perestroika, was decided. If the junta had emerged victorious in Moscow, the other regions of the country would have probably capitulated without a struggle.
