Algirdas Brazauskas tells how the Gorbachevs tried to prevent the "divorce" between the Union and Lithuania

Pages 45-50 | Published online: 08 Dec 2014

Abstract

The events narrated here in an excerpt from the book Divorce Lithuanian Style by Algirdas Brazauskas, president of the Lithuanian Republic, occurred just a little more than three years ago and were the unexpected epilogue to the Congress of the Communist Party of Lithuania that convened in December 1989. That congress proclaimed the secession of the Communist Party of Lithuania from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which set the stage for Lithuania's exit from the USSR.
