Abstract
In 1949, various kinds of popular gatherings were held in connection with the festivities surrounding Stalin's seventieth birthday; the press praised his genius and theaters put on plays directly or indirectly related to the life and activity of the father of peoples. Party and state leaders of many countries of the world came to Moscow as to Olympus to honor the anniversary. One after the other, they went to the podium on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater to pronounce their panegyrics—each more flowery than the last. Interestingly, the orators read prepared texts of their speeches in Russian.
