Abstract
Much is being currently discussed and written about the role of the army and its position in the state and about military reform. However, this is not a new problem: society has faced these issues before. One need only recall the fifties. But, whereas today such issues are discussed quite vociferously, in those days people's silence spoke louder: there was no widespread discussion, nor indeed could there have been.
