Abstract
The election of deputies to the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, which ended on 20 December 1998, did not, it seems, escape the attention of any of the major Russian newspapers and television companies. The elections earned their designation as the dirtiest in our recent national history. Most commentators stated with good reason that the "northern capital" had become a kind of proving ground for the latest "election technology"—more accurately, techniques for the psychological manipulation of voter preferences.
