Abstract

Russia is about as susceptible to generalization as the United States. Is it turning inward? Is it turning outward? Is it increasingly nationalist? If so, why did a Russian auto parts worker tell me a few months ago that (1) Russia had no business sending its sons to useless slaughter in Chechnya, and (2) he envied the United States its patriotism, since Russians have no national feeling.
