Abstract
On 11 June 2004 a discussion on the development of the mass media, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press in Russia took place in the editorial offices of Svobodnaia mysl'-XXI. The discussion was triggered by Vitalii Tret'iakov's "Leap to the Realm of Freedom," published in the fourth number of the journal [for 2004]. The article is part of a textbook based on a course that the author has already taught at the Journalism School of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) for several years. In addition to V.T. Tret'iakov himself, the following people took part in the discussion: the editor in chief of Svobodnaia mysl'-XXI, V.L. Inozemtsev; the head of the Politics Department at Novaia gazeta, O.G. Dzhemal'; the head research fellow at the Institute for Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, A.V. Kiva; the writer and sociopolitical commentator A.S. Salutskii; and the head research fellow of the Institute for European Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, D.E. Furman. Here we offer our readers a transcript of the discussion.
