Armenia Between Autocracy and Polyarchy

Abstract

A situation of scarce natural resources inevitably gives rise to a coalition of representatives of merchant and manufacturing capital that includes regional princelings and state bureaucrats. The presidency is only part of this system. One example is the political system of post-Soviet Armenia, in the formation of which the Karabakh conflict has also played a pivotal role.
