Status of globally threatened birds of Sapo National Park, Liberia

Abstract

Sapo National Park was the first established and is the largest national park in Liberia and contains the secondlargest area of primary tropical rainforest in West Africa. However, little is known about the distribution, population density, and ecology of threatened birds occurring in the park. In this study, we assessed the population status and distribution of birds of global conservation concern occurring in the park. Between April and June 2014, we surveyed 17 line transects of 2 km each in and around Sapo National Park, using Distance Sampling. We recorded eight of the 13 globally threatened birds in Liberia, including Gola Malimbe Malimbus ballmanni (Endangered), Timneh Parrot Psittacus timneh (Endangered) and Yellow-bearded Greenbul Criniger olivaceus (Vulnerable). The results of this study provide the first baseline information on the status of these species in the park and also show the importance of Sapo National Park in the conservation of not only birds but also biodiversity in general in Liberia and West Africa.

Statut des oiseaux globalement menacés du Parc national de Sapo, au Libéria

Le parc national de Sapo a été le premier parc national établie au Libéria et le plus grand du pays et contient la deuxième plus grande zone de forêt tropicale primaire en Afrique de l’Ouest. Cependant, on en sait peu sur la répartition, la densité de la population et l’écologie des oiseaux menacés présents dans le parc. Dans cette étude, nous avons évalué l’état de la population et la répartition des oiseaux suscitant une préoccupation mondiale pour la conservation et existant dans le parc. Entre avril et juin 2014, nous avons entrepris 17 transects linéaires de 2 km chacun dans et autour du parc national de Sapo, en utilisant l’échantillonnage à distance. Nous avons enregistré 8 des 13 oiseaux globalement menacés au Libéria, y compris, le Malimbe d’Ibadan Malimbus ballmanni (En danger), le Perroquet Timneh Psittacus timneh (En danger), et le Bulbul à barbe jaune Criniger olivaceus (Vulnérable). Les résultats de cette étude apportent les premières informations de base sur l’état de ces espèces dans le parc et montrent également l’importance du parc national Sapo dans la conservation non seulement des oiseaux mais aussi de la biodiversité en général au Liberia et en Afrique de l’Ouest.
