Report of suspected kidnapping in cooperative breeding Southern Ground-Hornbill in South Africa with consequences for conservation reintroductions

Abstract

Kidnapping in avian species is a rarely observed phenomenon and warrants greater investigation. Kidnapping, reported for some cooperative breeding birds and mammals, has now been confirmed for the Southern Ground-Hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri and has implications for management of reintroductions of neighbouring groups. A juvenile was kidnapped from a newly reintroduced group in Limpopo, South Africa. It is suggested that this kidnapping was driven by the group to weaken and destabilise a neighbouring group, rather than strengthen their own with an additional helper.

Rapport sur un enlèvement présumé dans un élevage coopératif du Bucorve, du Sud en Afrique du Sud, avec des implications pour les réintroductions à des fins de conservation

L’enlèvement d’espèces aviaires est un phénomène rarement observé et mérite une enquête plus approfondie. Les enlèvements, signalés pour certains oiseaux et mammifères nicheurs, ont maintenant été confirmés pour le Bucorve du Sud Bucorvus leadbeateri et ont des retombées sur la gestion des réintroductions de groupes voisins. Un mineur a été enlevé d’un groupe nouvellement réintroduit à Limpopo, en Afrique du Sud. Il est suggéré que le groupe a poussé cet enlèvement à affaiblir et à déstabiliser un groupe voisin, plutôt que de renforcer le leur avec un assistant supplémentaire.
