Reproductive biology of the round herring Etrumeus whiteheadi

Pages 177-187 | Published online: 08 Apr 2010

Abstract

Histological analysis is used to study ovarian development and frequency of spawning in the South African round herring Etrumeus whiteheadi. Seasonality of spawning and the relationship between fish size and maturity are studied by analysis of maturity data and by application of histological techniques. Batch fecundity is estimated. Evidence is presented to support the categorization of round herring as a multiple spawner.
