Abstract
Background The aim was to study by ultrasound the location of levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine device in the uterus in a prospective, open study.
Methods. Twenty women of fertile age with normal size uterus were examined transabdominally and transvaginally before and after insertion of levonorgestrel releasing device with three different ultrasound devices.
Results. Leumorgeslrel releasing device was detected in all cases in the uterus with both transabdominal and transvaginal probes. The proximal and the distal ends of the vertical arm of the device were detectable. It was possible to ensure the fundal position of the device in the uterus
Conclusion. Ultrasonography is also well suited for determining the location of levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine device within the uterus. Both transabdominal and transvaginal examinations can be used.
