Abstract
A series of 107 cases, hospitalized at the Turku Clinic for acid or alkali ingestion in 1948-1959, is reported. The treatment and its results are discussed. In spite of the favourable action of antibiotics and steroids strictures may still develop. The amount of the swallowed acid or lye was one of the most decisive factors in determining the final outcome.
