Abstract

A new method for x-ray examination of the sigmoid sinus on both sides is described. The value of the method in diagnosing pathological changes of these vessels or their surroundings is discussed.

A poly-ethylene catheter is inserted into the superior bulb of one of the internal jugular veins. A retrograde contrast injection is made under compression of the vein distal to the catheter. The retrograde contrast flow is sufficient to visualize the sigmoid sinus on both sides. This technique is useful especially for preoperative examination in cases when neck-dissection is planned.
