Abstract
In order to examine whether ionizing radiation would be useful as a complement to the existing instrumentation for oto-microsurgery a preliminary investigation was performed on the effects of local irradiation of the labyrinth of the rat. Special attention has been paid to the histopathologic effects on the osseous and membranous tissues. Irradiation was performed with a 2 mm wide beam of high-energy protons directed so as to destroy part of the right vestibule.—The animals were killed at different times, up to some months after irradiation.
