Social Hearing Rehabilitation

Pages 241-249 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

About 3% of a population needs audiologic treatment, which in Denmark is performed through three hearing rehabilitation centers with a full-time staff of otologists, teachers, engineers, technicians and social-workers handling (free of charge) about 7000 new patients a year in close cooperation with about 100 local schoolteachers trained in teaching lip-reading, hearing training and speech-correction.

The average total cost per patient including the hearing aid (supposed to last for 5 years) corresponds to 5 days in a hospital.

Severe cases are transferred to a special training school for adult interns in Fredericia.

The training of children below 7 years of age is carried out by a special children's guidance clinic.

Effective prophylaxis will according to our statistics reduce the number of hard of hearing patients by one third.
