Abstract
The writers have followed the post-operative course after stapediolysis in 30 cases presenting no vestibular disturbances pre-operatively. The examination consisted of daily positional tests, and the writers show that in about two-thirds of all cases labyrinthine irritation occurred, which, as a rule, subsided within one week. The causes and pathologico-anatomic background of this reaction are discussed.
The aim of the present investigation was to study which vestibular disturbances occur during the post-operative phase following stapediolysis. The audiologic course after this operation has been charted in the studies of a number of investigators, but hitherto no study seems to have been made of the clinical vestibular functions during the period immediately after the operation. In stapediolysis performed according to the direct method, the perilymphatic space is opened, and it therefore seems probable to us that this must have an effect on the vestibular portion of the labyrinth. The majority of writers contend, however, that only a brief attack of dizziness occurs during the operation and that the patient may complain of slight dizziness during the first few post-operative days.
