Abstract

It is always a matter of surprise that so many chapters of medical science do not follow a steady line of progress. They show, on the contrary, a curious tendency to cyclic behaviour. However, this waxing and waning of progress is only apparently vain; just as the waves with their recurrent motion bring floating objects nearer to the seashore, so every crest of this recurrent activity brings the problem nearer to its final solution.
