Abstract

Section of the eighth nerve caused a degeneration of the unmyelinated fibers in the tunnel of Corti followed by loss of the ganglion cells in the modiolus and degeneration of the eighth nerve. Two days after section of the eighth nerve the N2 was found to disappear. Three days after section of the eighth nerve the N1 was found to disappear. After the N1 and N2 disa-appeared a new neural like potential called the W phenomenon was observed. The degeneration of the unmyelinated fibers was associated with the disappearance of the N1 and N2.
