Anatomical and Physiological Effects of Chronic Section of the Eighth nerve in Cat: Paper read before the Acoustical Society of America, May, 1962.

Abstract

Section of the eighth nerve caused a degeneration of the unmyelinated fibers in the tunnel of Corti followed by loss of the ganglion cells in the modiolus and degeneration of the eighth nerve. Two days after section of the eighth nerve the N₂ was found to disappear. Three days after section of the eighth nerve the N₁ was found to disappear. After the N₁ and N₂ disa-appeared a new neural like potential called the W phenomenon was observed. The degeneration of the unmyelinated fibers was associated with the disappearance of the N₁ and N₂.
