Abstract
To elucidate this subject a study has been made of the various regions where mucus is found; much information has been derived from observations of the skin of eels (Anguilla) and xenopus toads, in which mucus provides a water-proofing layer on the thin and flexible skin. The olfactory recess of some fish contains lamellae studded with goblet cells for the protection of the thin epithelium against excessive inward or outward passage of water.
