General Orotracheal Anesthesia for Bronchoscopy

Abstract

Bronchoscopy was made under general orotracheal anesthesia by introducing into the trachea a cuffed No. 4 or 5 Magill endotracheal tube followed by the bronchoscope. Intermittent positive pressure respiration with nitrous oxide and oxygen was used. The technique ensured good operating conditions without time limit. PCO₂ in arterialized capillary blood was analysed in seven patients during the procedure; in some samples there was a minor rise in CO₂ tension.
