A Survey of Hand-Schüller-Christian's Disease in Otolaryngology

Abstract

The E.N.T. manifestations of Hand-Schüller-Christian's disease are reviewed on the basis of 500 cases from the literature. One or more E.N.T. manifestations had been observed in 90% of the previously reported cases, especially chronic discharge, destruction of the temporal bones, acoustic and vestibular changes, peripheral facial palsy, and granuloma in the nose and nasal sinuses. In addition, there have been specific changes of the tonsils, in the form of ulcerative tonsillitis and tonsillar hyperthrophy, ulcerative stomatitis, and in a few cases specific changes of the laryngeal, tracheal, and bronchial mucosa. The incidence and nature of the changes are described.
