Abstract

The oxygen consumption of each turn of the guinea pig cochlea was measured with a differential type ultra-microrespirometer. The basal portion of the cochlea had a greater rate of oxygen consumption per milligram of tissue than the apex. The rate of oxygen consumption was found to be dependent on the substrate and potassium concentration. Kanamycin damaged cochleae had a decreased rate of oxygen consumption.
