Abstract

In a previous paper four different methods of treatment for acute maxillary sinusitis with secretion were compared with the aid of radiological registration of the sinus state. In the present investigation five further methods are compared. The results of the treatment by irrigation only or by high doses of penicillin V + nasal decongestant combined with irrigation or oxyphenbutazone or by methacycline + nasal decongestant were mutually similar and better than the results of treatment with penicillin V + nasal decongestant. The bacteriological findings were in agreement with previous investigations demonstrating a high frequency of sterile secretions and of penicillin-resistant bacteria and a predominance of Haemophilus influenzae in young individuals.
