Abstract

A material of 96 cases with malignant tumours of the tongue was analysed and classified according to the TNM system. Regional lymph nodes were found in 36 patients and distant metastases in 1 patient. 75 of the patients were surgically treated, 16 radiologically and in 5 patients no treatment at all was established. Local recurrences appeared in 25 patients during the first 5 years after the initial treatment. The 5-year survival rate of the total material was 45%. Conclusively it might be stressed that a surgical therapy alone or in combination with radiotherapy should be established to improve the survival.
