Abstract
680 patients with various ear diseases were examined preoperatively with a simultaneous multisectional tomography technique originally proposed by McGann. This method is technically easier and quicker than Poly-tome simple section tomography. in 83% the roentgenological and surgical findings were in agreement. This, together with analysis of the causes of the discrepancies between the corresponding findings in the remaining 17%, appeared to warrant the following indications for preoperative roentgenological examination in ear surgery: obligatory in tumours, congenital abnormalities, fractures, foreign bodies and infectious complications;.facultative in chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma and in revision/ reconstruction of radical cavities; questionable in uncomplicated chronic otitis media and ossicular fixations/ deficiencies.
