Otic Placode and Cephalic Neural Crest

Abstract

The otic placode does not develop by local thickening of the ectoderm; it gradually becomes distinct as the surrounding ectoderm thins. This thinning in the 5-8 somite stage can be explained by the observation of many ectodermal cells breaking away from the superficial ectoderm and changing into ectodermal mesenchyme (neural crest).
