The Role of β-Lactamase-Producing Bacteroides In Recurrent Tonsillitis

Abstract

Group A β-hemolytic streptococci are frequently isolated from tonsillar infections (Wannamaker, 1972). The tonsillar infection can recur immediately after the penicillin administration has stopped. This has been explained by reinfeciton, and prolonged penicillin administration is recommended. Therapy failure has become more common during the last few years (Brook, 1981).

Anaerobic bacteria have been increasingly recognized as pathogens in upper respiratory infections during the last few years. Technological advances in the field of anaerobic bacteriology now enable identification of anaerobic microorganisms.
